The move toward Open Access (OA) remained the biggest area of growth in the journals industry, with governments and funders developing new OA policies and mandates in consultation with cOAlition S, UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Our strong engagement with Open Access continued, including signing Read & Publish deals with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the University of Vienna, and Iowa State University in the US.
We launched a variety of new OA journals such as NAR Genomics & Bioinformatics, in silico Plants, and Neurosurgery Open. One established title, National Science Review (NSR)—which is now becoming a fully OA journal—received an Impact Factor of 13.222 in the latest Journal Citation Report making it the third most influential multidisciplinary science journal.
